So I know it has been a long time since I squawked about a restaurant, but The Bird is worth squawking about.
This past Tuesday evening some friends and I went to The Pig for the The Bird pop-up. The Bird is EatWell DC’s newest venture, which is touted as a “Beak to Toe” restaurant, which means it will serve all parts of the bird, as well as vegetables grown on the company’s farm, craft cocktails, beers and wine.
All four of us loved our meals. There was so much food that we had a couple of doggie (or in this case “birdie”) bags to take home. They start you off by bringing a bowl of bird feed to the table instead of bread. The bird feed is made up of many things (sunflower, pumpkin, benne, black sesame, hemp and chia seeds, roasted black lentils, red and green raisins, cranberries, apricots and nigella) but no nuts for those of you with nut allergies.
We had a couple of appetizers, and both were delicious. One was the sweet and spicy chicken wings, and the other was the flight of eggs, consisting of quail, partridge, chicken and duck eggs.
For the next course, we each had the Eatwell Farm Bibb Salad with radishes, almonds, and raisins with an herb vinaigrette. The salad and radishes were from Eatwell Farm in La Plata, MD.
For our entrees we had the Half Heirloom Roasted Chicken in truffle jus (so juicy!), the Fried Half Amish Chicken (lightly breaded), and the Ostrich Filet and Sausage which was amazing.
We were too full for the dessert special, a large chocolate egg filled with all kinds of goodies, but others seemed to enjoy it.
The Bird’s restaurant is scheduled to open later this summer at 1337 11th Street NW, on the southwest corner of 11th and O in Shaw, and I know I can’t wait for it to hatch!
